Ways of Knowing Nature

I explore how we understand the natural world through animal research, museum work, art, and literature — and what each way of seeing leaves out.

About me

How do we come to know nature?

I'm Edward, a high-school student interested in animals — and in the very different ways people make sense of them.

I compare venom across species, prepare insect specimens, build tools to observe flight, and trace animals through art and literature. Each practice asks something different, and I try to keep those questions open.

Ways I work

Six ways of working.

  • Animal Research

A comparative venom dataset across 125 species; environmental toxicology in a university honey bee lab.

  • Natural History

Hand-prepared insect specimens, museum collection care, and glacial geology in the field.

  • Creative Technology

An Arduino imaging system built to film and track insect wing motion.

  • Visual Art

A seven-meter scroll on animals in history, plus years of drawings and paintings.

  • Literature

A student-led Moby-Dick lecture; directing and acting in Kong Yiji.

  • Public Learning

A toxins club with eight lectures; museum talks for over a thousand visitors.
